A Living Craft
What began in San Francisco in the 1970s is taking on a new life in Gabian. For the past ten years, Eric has taught young artists the skills and disciplines required not only to practise a craft, but to build an independent life around it.
He is not selling a business. He is passing forward everything he has learned—placing his library of carvings, images and techniques into the shared care of a cooperative of artists and craftspeople.
Being an independent artist and living well is an art in itself.
A Foundation for the Next Generation
The cooperative is intended to become a sustaining “day job” for emerging artists: a place where they can earn, learn and contribute while continuing to develop their own practices.
Eric’s advantage was a family of professional artists, craftspeople and independent creators. Their example taught him that creativity is not confined to the object being made. It is a complete approach to work, survival and life.
His own life is richly documented through photographs, newspapers, magazines and catalogues. Now, the studio is opening its doors and bringing that history into conversation with a new generation.
Old World Craft, New World Reach
Eric’s first market emerged in the United States during the 1970s, before dollhouses had developed into the industry they are today. Now, Britain’s longstanding fascination with miniature craftsmanship presents a natural new chapter for Lansdown Arts.
Digital communication also offers something that was unavailable when Eric began: a direct relationship between artist and collector. It allows independent makers to share their work with a wider audience and benefit more fully from what they create, rather than depending primarily upon agents, galleries and catalogue companies.
